Sony A9II: Adding to What the A9 Series does Best

The A9 series launched back in 2007 with fast focusing, great tracking, and pin-drop silent capabilities. The A9 initially launched to target the sports, wildlife and news photography segments, for obvious reasons. To say the least, the camera was flawless in taking those great wildlife photos. The Sony A9II builds on those very same qualities that we’ve come to adore and love in the A9 series.

The Feature Set in the Sony A9II:

The Sony camera may not build much on its existing features, but it still does bring something new to the table- improved ergonomics, faster wireless, and wired connectivity, and better stabilization. As you can imagine, much of these improvements, if not all, aimed at speeding the workflow of professional photographers.

The Sony A9II uses the same 24.2mp full-frame CMOS image sensor as its predecessor. The Bionz image processor, on the other hand, has undergone a few improvements, which translates to a faster sensor readout and improved face AE/AF tracking. Another feature that goes through the improvements department is the weather sealing, which, too, upgraded for better endurance against those harsh weather elements.

The five axis in-body stabilization has also undergone some change to provide a shutter compensation of up to 5.5 stops.

Coming to Design:

The design of the Sony A9II has changed too. It now looks much like the A7R IV. The rear joystick and AF- On buttons are far more prominent. The rear control dial has now found a place on top of the camera.

As for the shutter tech, that too has undergone a revamp with the ability to avoid motion blur and also to last for more than 500,000 cycles.

Storage and Connectivity on the Sony A9II:

The USB Type C port now supports USB 3.2 Gen1 transfer speeds, and the two SD card slots feature faster UHS-II speeds.

To improve on workflow speeds, the Sony A9 II also has an Ethernet Terminal, 5GHz Wi-Fi 802.11ac, as well as file transfer over SSL or TLS encryption for added safety.

Now, photographers also have the option of attaching a voice memo onto a photograph. This may be a thoughtful feature, as it will allow users to attach additional context to the picture allowing editors and the like to better place the photograph.

Much of the Same:

Most of the other feature set remains the same as the older model. The ability to shoot at 20fps with the electronic shutter and 693 on-sensor Face detection autofocus points, 4K video recording with the ability to shoot at 30fps, a 3-inch touch screen display, and a 3.76M dot resolution electronic viewfinder are some of the features that remain untouched since the last model.

Ready for Sale:

The Sony A9II will be ready for sale in November with preorders taken at B&H Photo.
