iPhone 17
You can expect that the release of the iPhone 16 series model will be done in the second half of 2024. But there are rumours about the release of the iPhone 17 series. This next generation of Apple’s iPhone lineup is expected to be available with upgraded front-facing cameras, a smaller Dynamic Island, a refreshed design, etc. In this article, we will discuss the pricing, release date, and other rumours about the iPhone 17 series.
Before that, you should know that the debut of iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro can happen in September of this year. Both of these iPhone series are expected to come with a few decent upgrades in every aspect like color, chips, display, camera, etc. But as per the initial rumors, few major upgrades to the iPhone are set for 2025, including a new A-series chip that is built on the 2nm process, and LTPO 120Hz displays, which will be available for everyone, not for only Pro users.
Size Could Be Smaller:
In 2024, we are expecting that Apple will adjust screen sizes of two models— iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. As per reports, these might come with larger displays and slimmer bezel borders. So the major focus of Apple will be on its screen-fiddling energy on the iPhone series models — iPhone 17 and Plus.
The entry-level iPhone of Apple is now available at $799 whereas the price of the larger entry-level iPhone Plus is $899. iPhone 17 Pro level is available at $999. Besides, the starting price of the larger Pro Max versions begin from $1,099.
Although the rumour is not widely reported, some changes can be noticed in the physical dimension of iPhone 17. It is expected that these models will come in a skinnier and taller design whereas the aspect ratio will be 19.6:9. However, the current iPhone’s aspect ratio is 16:9.
iPhone 17— Design:
When it comes to design, the iPhone 15 lineup impressed us with its design. The iPhone 15 comes with a matte glass back that uses color infusion technology. In recent years, this model has probably had the best iPhone design. You can also expect the design to be available with the iPhone 16 this year. On the other hand, a Titanium chassis is available in the iPhone 15 Pro. As a result, the model became stronger and lighter. In addition, it is available in a new brushed finish. Reports said that the company is now following a revised method in order for finishing the titanium so that this year’s iPhones get a shinier look like stainless steel. However, at present there is no report about Apple’s plans regarding major design changes to the iPhone 17 series.
iPhone 17— Display:
The advent of the LTPO display to this lineup is probably the biggest rumour which can surprise you the most. The company first brought the Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion in the iPhone 13 Pro model.
In the best iPhone models and Apple Watches, the low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide technology is used to power OLED displays. This technology allows for a variable refresh rate so that the iPhone gets the capability to switch between 120Hz scrolling for fluid animations. It helps to save battery life along with providing smooth scrolling as well as excellent gaming performance.
According to a report, all iPhone 17 models will be available with Apple’s Always-On Display. Besides, these models may feature the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. The company will use the LTPO or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide thin film transistor OLED to all four iPhone 17 series.
Rumour:
According to a source, the company will use the LTPO technology for all new iPhones in 2025. Apple is likely to apply this to even the base models so that these models can get 120Hz refresh. The company’s plan is to bring LTPO displays to the upcoming models of iPhone 17.
As per the reports, Apple may be working on a scratch-resistant layer that will be able to protect the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro from sudden scratches. Besides, the company is likely to use a super-hard AR layer, which will allow the display to become more scratch-resistant. Like other previous lineups, the iPhone 17 series may have four variants. The display sizes of these four models will be:
iPhone 17— 6.1” display
iPhone 17 Slim— 6.6” display
Apple iPhone 17 Pro— 6.3” display
iPhone 17 Pro Max— 6.9” display
The new models, except the iPhone 17 Pro Max, will be available in an aluminum design. But the Pro Max will have titanium build. Besides, this model will be equipped with a ‘narrowed Dynamic Island’ feature which becomes possible because of the new ‘metalen’ technology, which is used for the proximity sensor.
iPhone 17— Increased Megapixels And RAM:
Both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim models will be equipped with 8GB of RAM. Besides, these models will have an A18 or A19 chipset. However, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models will come with 12GB of RAM. In addition, these models will feature an A19 Pro chipset. However, at present, 6GB of RAM is available in the modern standard iPhones. On the other hand, the current Pro models are equipped with 8GB of RAM.
iPhone 17— A19 Chip:
The A17 Pro chip of Apple brought hardware-accelerated ray-tracing to iPhone 15 Pro models. It was the first chip which was built on the 3nm process. The company may bring the A18 chips that are expected to be available in the iPhone 16 series.
Apple is now planning to use 2nm from TSMC for those chips, which may be built in the next year. A report said that Apple is the first company to have such chips that are built using the 2nm process. While the 3nm process has made a jump earlier, the 2nm switch is also expected to bring denser chips, which will be more compact and have enhanced processing power. But we still don’t know how well it will perform. The power consumption was reduced 3× and the performance was enhanced to about 5× when the company moved from 5 nm to 3nm.
Because of the jump to 2nm, people can experience a 10% to 15% increase in performance.
Besides, the power consumption can drop to 30% from 25%. The company starts trial productions for the 2nm chips in the second half of this year. The mass manufacturing will be started at the beginning of next year.
iPhone 17— Camera:
Two camera upgrades are expected to be seen in the iPhone 17. These upgrades were unavailable in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 lineups. The Pro models of the company came with a three-lens camera configuration— a main camera, Ultra Wide, and a Telephoto lens.
The main lens in the iPhone 14 Pro was upgraded to 48 MP. iPhone 15 inherited the feature. You may expect the company to offer the pixel-boosting treatment to the Ultra Wide camera of the iPhone 16 Pro. Moreover, the telephoto camera will have a 48MP camera lens. It indicates that all three lenses will be able to shoot in 48MP ProRaw format. You can expect the feature to be available in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 is expected to inherit the rumoured 48MP Ultra Wide camera of the iPhone 16. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro will come with a 48MP telephoto lens.
According to a report, the company will bring a major upgrade to the front camera lens of iPhone 17. The iPhone 17 series will come with a 24MP sensor front-facing camera which is now 12MP to help you to capture better selfies and record videos. Additionally, you can have a better calling experience on FaceTime.
UNDER DISPLAY FACE ID:
Face ID under the display is a new innovation powered by a 24MP front-facing camera in the iPhone 17 Pro model. The company may also launch a new feature called “under panel Face ID” for its Pro models — iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max, leading to a reduction in the size of the Dynamic Island.
AI:
Still, no specific rumours are there about the use of artificial intelligence in the iPhone 17 series. But the variants of these series may come with multiple new tools based on artificial intelligence.
5G And WI-FI:
The iPhone 16 model can come with the Wi-Fi 6E feature. This model may inherit the feature from the earlier model, the iPhone 15 Pro. As a major upgrade, the iPhone 16 Pro is likely to feature Wi-Fi 7. The company might add the feature to the iPhone 17 lineup. A rumour said that the company is now developing its Wi-Fi chips with the aim of reducing reliance on third-party suppliers. The company tried to use 5G modems, but they didn’t succeed. As per the reports, the self-developed Wi-Fi chips of Apple may face difficulties to hit the market in the next year, as Apple-designed modem may not power whatever Wi-Fi is on board.
Qualcomm and Apple made a 3-year deal in late 2023. As a result, iPhone users can see Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF Systems feature in iPhones in the next three years— 2024, 2025, and 2026. Qualcomm is going to supply the 5G modem of iPhone 17. But if you want to use the iPhone 16 Pro, you should know this model will feature the new Snapdragon X75 modem.
If the company follows the pattern, it is expected that X75 will feature in the entire lineup. Otherwise, it could only be available on the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus and make a way for the Snapdragon X80. Qualcomm said in February 2024 that it features revolutionary AI innovations along with a 5G AI Processor. Moreover, it is equipped with fully-integrated NB-NTN satellite communications support. With the help of this feature, it becomes possible to unlock major satellite communication over the iPhones that already exist.
iPhone 17— Release Date:
iPhone releases are usually done in September of the year. That’s why you can expect the iPhone 16 to be released in September 2024. As usual, the iPhone 17 is expected to be available in September of next year.
Generally, pre-orders for any device start on Friday. We all know that how consistent Apple is with the release dates of its iPhone models —
iPhone 15 series: Sept. 22, 2023
Apple iPhone 14 series: Sept. 16, 2022
iPhone 13 series: Sept. 24, 2021
Although the release date of the iPhone 17 is not announced, it may be done in Fall 2025.
Price Rumours:
Like the release dates, the company is also consistent when it comes to the price of the new iPhones. Although nothing has yet been confirmed, the price of the iPhone 17 can be similar to the previous models. Let’s see the launch price of the last three entry-level iPhones:
iPhone 15 (128GB): US $799
Apple iPhone 14 (128GB): $799
iPhone 13 (128GB): $799
However, the price of the 17 could vary a bit. But, $799 can be the safe starting price. Based on storage and screen size, the price will vary. The Pro version will cost more.
Pre-Order Information
As soon as Apple will make it official, the 17 will be available for pre-order.
The Bottom Line:
The iPhone 17 Pro Max, one of the variants of the 17 lineup, may feature a narrowed Dynamic Island. However, the other three variants will go with that feature’s current design. All credits go to the new “metalens” technology because of which the iPhone 17 Pro Max model will feature the smaller Dynamic Island to assist in reducing the Face ID sensor’s size.
